Punching above our weight

E-mail Print

Last weekend saw the ANSW State Relay Championships held at Blacktown Athletics Track. It was a weekend where Illawong Revesby Workers Athletics punched above its weight not only on the track but also in the field.

With Blacktown being hot, as only Blacktown can, it provided the opportunity to “turn up the heat” before summer.

We entered some 40 teams over the course of the weekend with many outstanding results from all athletes from our U/14 to our +200 teams.

Overall we finished the weekend with a King’s ransom in medals:

  • 9 GOLD
  • 5 SILVER
  • 6 BRONZE

A truly outstanding effort.

On the track our gold medal teams were:

  • Women’s Open 4 x 400m (Alicia Keir, Jessica Thornton, Alison McAvoy and Marsha Dunkel)
  • Women’s +120 4 x 400m (Belinda Martin, Danielle Camenzuli, Elice Stevill and Karen Herrmann)
  • Women’s +160 4 x 800m (Elice Stevill, Belinda Martin, Karen Stanley and Robyn Basman)
  • Men’s U/20 4 x 200m (Chris Livirizzi, Andrew Abdullah, Eric Herger and Yianni Kalantzis)

In the field our gold medal teams were:

  • Women’s U/18 High Jump (Charlotte O’Brien, Tomysha Clark, Georgia Kalnin and Eva Kostopoulos).
  • Women’s Open High Jump (Charlotte O’Brien, Tomysha Clark, Georgia Kalnin and Lyndal Schnabel).
  • Women’s Open Javelin (Rachel Herger, Tomasin Clark, Genevieve Nisbetand and Marsha Dunkel)
  • Men’s U/18 High Jump (Gianluca Cibei, Kobi Sharp, Harrison Brierley and Ky Gawinek)
  •  Men’s Masters Shot Put (Jamie Muscat, Georg Herger, Ryan Mercer, Jason Watson)

Noteworthy that on Saturday morning our U/18 women broke the Open State Record of 6.60m in an outstanding effort of 6.70m, only to hold the record for some three hours. It was broken by three of the four women in our Open Women’s team. The team jumped an impressive 6.85m (or an average of over 1.71m).

Our other medal winning teams were:

Silver

  • Women’s +120 4 x 200m
  • Men’s Open 4 x 100m
  • Men’s +160 4 x 200m
  • Men’s +160 4 x 400m
  • Men’s +200 4 x 1500m

Bronze

  • Women’s U/14 4 x 1500m
  • Women’s Open 4 x 100m
  • Women’s Open 4 x 200m
  • Women’s Masters Shot Put
  • Men’s U/20 4 x 400m
  • Men’s Open 4 x 200m

In addition our teams recorded many close placings just out of the medals over both days of the carnival.

While there were many outstanding athletic efforts over the weekend, two were the most significant in the club. The tremendous efforts of Karen Herrmann and Michael Dooley were again to the fore. Much of the weekend would not have been possible without them. They spend countless hours organising and reorganising teams in the lead up to the weekend and then spent the weekend assisting with coordination. They received terrific support from Zach Holdsworth and Cassandra Dooley who both eased the load of team organisation. Thank you for your passion and enthusiasm.
