Shane Loveridge breaks 50m in discus

Shane breaks 50m barrier in the discus at Sydney Track Classic

To demonstrate Illawong Athletics also excels in the field, Shane Loveridge performed sensationally at the Sydney Track Classic last Saturday night to throw a new PB of 53.00m and finish a tremendous 4th in the men’s open discus competition in a field that included Olympian Benn Harradine and Commonwealth Games representative Aaron Neighbour.

This effort puts Shane within 4m of the Commonwealth Games “B” qualifying standard.

He was overheard to say that while the XXL singlet was a huge improvement, he probably could do with a size or two larger. It’s on its way Shane.
We look forward to more PBs from Shane in the near future.

ELLA NELSON SMASHES WORLD JUNIOR QUALIFIER IN 200m

Having taken out the 100m the day before in the tightest of finishes, Ella produced a scintillating effort to take out the U/18 women’s 200m in 23.94, shattering the World Junior (U/20s) qualifier of 24.20. Even more impressive is that fact that Ella is still eligible for the World Youth (U/18s) championships.
This now gives the club two potential representatives at these championships to be held in Moncton Canada later this year with Jake Hammond already recording qualifying times in the men’s 200m.
The championships also provided a host of other highlights throughout the weekend and again demonstrated the club’s junior strength. These included:

  • Four Illawong athletes finishing in the top eight in the mens U/18s 1500m with Ozner Abdullah collecting gold. This augurs well for the state relays later in the year. Interestingly the top ten athletes in this race all ran PBs.  Check out the video of the last 400m below
  • New member Scarlett Wynn collecting gold in the U/14 women’s High Jump.
  • Monica Dimon winning the discus and finishing 2nd in the shot put for the U/14 women.
  • Phil Spratt achieving his long awaited national qualifier in the 400m hurdles.
  • Bailey Lang collecting medals in the 100m and 200m of the U/14 men.
  • The return of Mia MacKinnon to win the U/20 women’s High Jump.

ILLAWONG TEAMS FINISH THIRD IN THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Unbelievably both Illawong’s teams finished third in the Club Championship held at SOPAC on Saturday 23 January.

Our teams, given no chance at all in the Athletics NSW preview, performed remarkably. Both teams made up of mostly of teenagers were competing against National open medalists and Olympians making this result even more meritorious.

Arriving early afternoon with the temperature in the 40s we took shelter under the Illawong tent and with everyone getting into the water and soft drink organized by Ian Lister.
